At the risk of being highly repetitive here is yet another version of McCalls 5800 this time made entirely of leftovers from other projects.
The skirt and bodice are two fabrics used previously, at around this time last year in fact, to make my daughters
Betty June dress the remnants of which were not enough to make anything of much but as I think they looked nice together I thought I would cobble together something
.
So I cut the skirt section out to have a strip of the polka dot fabric, which looks a lot nicer in real life than in the photo, and it all fitted and pieced together well so my calculations can't have been too far out.
The zip is neither cream nor white, more "dirt" and being a very long one had to be shortened while the bodice lining is in the remains of some cream lawn I used for the other two dresses and the skirt lining is in white muslin which looks more like stuff you would bandage your finger up with than anything....
...as this frayed considerably I had to make the lining shorter than I wanted so I pulled out some cotton lace and stuck that on the bottom to replace the lost inch from fraying. It works quite well I think and looks pretty.
Not the most glamorous of dresses but it looks nice and it has helped to use up some more bits and I have a dress that I haven't had to pay any more money out for so that must be all to the good.Just need the summer now so I can wear all three versions or the enthusiasm to knit cardigans to wear on top.I definitely will not be making anymore though as after a total of four makings up there is not a lot of the pattern left after the "helpful" shreddings of the household felines
Very lovely! The prints go together well, amazingly. In fact, I like all your versions of this pattern - your vintage-y renditions are so much more appealing than the envelope's.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joy!
DeleteYes I know exactly what you mean about the pattern envelope..it isn't exactly inspiring and I think that is the case with a lot of modern patterns it is a wonder any get made up at all when you think about it!
Wonderful idea and lovely use of fabrics, which I'll try to keep in mind whilst deciding what to do with leftover bits. Adore the cotton lace, too!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteYes I would never have thought that I could have made a dress from leftovers like that...it just proves what you can do when you put your mind to it so have a go too and I would be interested to hear how you got on!!
A lovely summer dress! Let's hope it'll actually get warmer, soon!
ReplyDeleteHope so...but we are due for more snow apparently!!
DeleteLove it - it brings to mind a summer picnic in a meadow. I think your soft prints went together beautifully.
ReplyDeleteMy one attenpt to cobble together fabric scraps into wearable art resulted in a patchwork jacket. It went too far toward art and not enough toward wearable.
a summer picnic sounds blissful...!
DeleteThe dress looks amazing! I love the lace at the bottom of the lining. I would never have thought of making that dress until I saw your versions, I agree that it is so much nicer than the pattern envelope. Now I wonder if I have any leftovers that lovely...
ReplyDeleteThank you and I am sure you have!!
DeleteSometimes the best results come from not having enough or the right materials causing creative solutions! Very lovely dress. I too have complained that the illustrations on pattern envelopes are not at all inspiring. Amazing that we still buy them, don't you think?
ReplyDeletewell this pattern was originally bought as a basis for altering it to make something else...if you see what I mean! It was only by accident I made the first actual dress from it.
DeleteThank you for your comment!
I tried to comment yesterday from my phone and had such problems. I do love your photos. Sorry about the rotten weather. It snowed today and yesterday so I know how you feel!
ReplyDeleteI am sure we haven't had snow like you have had but you still get to a point where enough is enough!!
