Travels.

Strolling along in Jerez de la Frontera
One of the things I was fortunate enough to do in February and which was a welcome break from my usual dull routine and rants about the bad weather was to visit my daughter in Spain again. She is working there as an English teacher in a school as part of her university course so any opportunity to cadge a holiday in a more temperate climate must be taken as far as I am concerned.
Apparently the weather there in that part of the country has not been too brilliant this winter and I think my daughter was told that it has been the coldest and wettest for fifteen years ....which is typical really. But! my week there early on in the month was gloriously warm and sunny with beautiful blue skies only interrupted by the flitting of butterflies and the pleasing sight of Swallows on the wing.....they won't appear here for at least another month at the earliest.Plus you could hear Chiff Chaffs chiff-chaffing,Storks making nests and there were LIZARDS and Orange trees EVERYWHERE!! How exotic can you get in February!!!

I didn't take too many photo's as I was just tooo excited and enjoying being there but here are a few...

It doesn't take much to amuse me

Jerez de la Frontera
This time we managed to get out of Cadiz and we visited some of the surrounding towns of interest too such as Jerez famous for its sherry production.
Our visit to Jerez included a trip to Gonzalez Byass, makers of Tio Pepe, where we just had to sample some of what was on offer.

We also squeezed in a day trip to Gibraltar which was a very odd place I found on the whole but everyone was very friendly and I am glad I went.Against my better judgement as I don't like heights ( although I love to fly) I agreed, like all good tourists there do, to go up in the cable car to the top of the rock itself.I definitely didn't take many photo's up there as was too petrified to go near the edge.I can report though that despite being that high up there was not even the slightest waft of a breeze.

Gibraltar as we left the marina for a trip out to sea.
I was much happier out on a boat trip we took to find Dolphins to watch, which we did,and could not get over just how near Africa was...you could almost reach out and touch it.

Morrocco!!
Other gorgeous towns included Vejer de la Frontera a typical white hilltop town with a Moorish feel to it containing lots of wonderful cafes with gorgeous food and wine and interesting narrow streets to wander around.

Vejer de la Frontera

Again it being up on a whopping big hill top I didn't like to get too close to the edge!

Steep drop on other side of balustrade but wonderful views all the same.

So all in all despite the lack of photo's a wonderful week filled with eating delicious food, drinking gorgeous wine and sherry marred only by some hair raising moments driving up cobbled narrow streets following dubious sat nav directions ( not me driving I hasten to add)and most of all just basking in the delight of warmth and sunshine.

thumbs up to sunshine, ice cream and holidays.
And just to prove that I did make it up the 430 metres to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar...

  4. Wow, how beautiful. I haven't seen Spain in so many years, okay decades, it really makes me want to go back. I never did see Gibraltar though and I always wondered what the rock was all about. You were very brave! I actually fainted in one of those cable cars once (to the Matterhorn) so I suppose I didn't get the full experience. LOL

    1. Well I had to shut my eyes going up and down which is odd as I love looking out of the window on a plane. You definitely wouldn't get me going up the Matterhorn so you far braver than me!!

  5. Sounds brilliant! Orange trees and blue skies and sun and the sea (and Sherry and great food and wine ;) are welcome at any time of year, but especially in February, aren't they? Glad you had a lovely time!
